BioIntraface®, Inc., located in Riverside, Rhode Island, was formed in February of 2009 to commercialize its biomaterials surface treatment technologies. The platform technologies involve the creation of economical, multifunctional metal oxide and polymer materials and coatings to control the bioactivity and antimicrobial properties of medical devices and implants. Biointraface® has continued optimizing and validating coatings for promising applications in orthopaedics, dentistry, catheters, wound dressings, topical antimicrobial products, and cosmetics applications. It has also obtained third-party verification of ISO biocompatibility testing for eight coatings with increasing levels of antimicrobial agents, where no cytotoxicity was indicated and similar tests showing long lasting antimicrobial efficacy against multiple strains of bacteria.

(BI) designs bioactive and antimicrobial medical coatings.Drawing on our close ties to academic, clinical, and industry partners (specifically Brown University, Rhode Island Hospital, and the medical device industry) allows BI to develop applications which are technically feasible, clinically relevant, and commercially viable. The first applications of our medical coating technology are anti-bacterial external fixation pins and intramedullary nails used to repair bone fractures.
The BioIntraface hybrid coating is unique in that it does not promote bacterial resistance or inhibit healing, yet is able to prevent bacterial biofilm formation while minimizing caregiver intervention.These factors make our coating a compelling choice for patients, clinicians, insurance companies, and hospitals.BI expects this technology to decrease the overall costs to the healthcare system.Based on our initial talks with medical device manufacturers, a scientifically-proven reduction in infection rate over traditional non-coated metal pins would be an attractive technology for manufacturers to in-license and give them a significant marketing advantage.
